Society of Illustrators Visit by Juan Diaz

 Society of Illustrators

The society of Illustrators or also called the Museum of Illustration is a museum located near Lexington Avenue  just two train stops away from our school using the M and 6 train. When arriving there for the first time it didn't even look like a museum. Without the sign outside it would look like a regular building in New York. Entering the build was a whole different story as it had 4 different floors filled with different art and illustrations. The purpose of the Society of Illustrators is to promote the the art of illustration and its history through time to now in the present. The use of illustration was what being a graphic design was back then when there was such thing as digital art or tools. Out of the 3 floor my most favorite illustration/artwork is in the 3 floor called The Ballad of Black Tom. The Ballad of Black Tom is a book cover by Victor LaValle. I like this art because of its aesthetic and its sense of gloominess as the man is walking towards what seems to be tentacles. Another painting or sketch that I liked was one called Girl Scout created by Joseph Christian Leyendeckeer. This was a Oil paint on a mounted canvas which was a cover for the Saturday Evening Post in October 25, 1924. I like this art because it show the different ideas and sketch of what the figure could have been wearing or what its fingers what have been structured as. Some tools that were used in the drawing or painting were oil painting, pencils, pen, brushes. Seeing these exhibitions does inspire me to make illustration as my drawing skills is horrible and so I want to improve my methods and skills to draw better. Also if I draw better I can probably be more creative with my work.
